Why is caustic added in the SWS column?

It is normally used to improve ammonia removal. The caustic raises pH which makes more of the NH3 as NH3 rather than NH4+. You have to be careful on how much is added though or it will hinder H2S stripping.

The pH in the top part of SWS Column is held at 5.5 to strip H2S. The pH is raised in the bottom part of the column to strip NH3. Corrosion control is a secondary consideration.
