Why is reactor feed introduced at top of the reactor?

In most of the fixed bed catalytic processes or moving bed processes the feed and recycle gas with make up gas is introduced co-currently from the top. In counter-current operation, there may be possibilities of flooding in the reactor. There are other disadvantages of bed disturbances.

There are some processes with upflow reactors and others where reaction is in upflow piping.
