Generally feed dispersion steam rate is about 1 wt% of feed. Lower feed preheat temperature and higher feed viscosity require an increase in dispersion steam. For optimization increase or decrease dispersion steam by 0.2 wt% and wait for 12 hours, then calculate new yield and material balance. Based on results, increase or decrease feed steam rate for further optimization step.

Steam requirement for feed atomization will be a function of the proprietary injector design. In general, more steam is required for heavier resid feedstocks.
