Why aren't nano-scale dispersed catalysts for upgrading heavy crude gaining traction in the industry considering that their yields are reported to be >90%?

The refining industry is VERY risk adverse. Until the processes are well demonstrated at a reasonable size, a new process will not be adopted unless the economics are overwhelming.

1) Many process scale-up issues are unresolved, i.e., tens of thousands barrels a day operation. 2) Watch out what were reported. They usually report % conversion, not yield. Most of the incremental high conversion results in gas yield.
