A platforming unit can run with upto 100 ppm of sulfur in naphtha stream. However the run length will be very small. The platforming unit must switch to hydrotreated feed within 8-10 hours.
Very high sulfur content of naphtha feed results into excessive coke formation on the catalyst. The catalyst activity will be suppressed.

It is an economics study. The run length decreases as the feed sulfur increases. We ran without an HDS unit for many years, watching the feed sulfur slowly increase, until we could justify an HDS unit. Then we built it. If you do not have the data for the study, your licensor can furnish you what you need.
