Portion of circulating cooling water needs to be filtered ( 1-2 % ) to maintain the concentration of suspended solids below desired levels. The purpose can be served by both type of filters. It is however a standard practice to provide a sidestream filter for the reason that it is a closed system with better control and occupies less space than a gravity filter. Gravity filter also needs to be constructed above the level of CT basin to allow filtered water to flow by gravity SSF on the other hand can be and is located on the ground. All in all SF is a better option.
