I think the Steam reformer you have purchased is from Technip or Linde as there are many licensors and depending on them the Reformer firing system is also different.
M/S Haldor Topsoe provides side wall fired reformers. Others provide Terrace walled reformers for maintaining high heat flux inside the reformer box.

Top Fired Steam Reformers are the Patented technology of KTI Technip. It is one of the types of Reformers available. there are other types of Reformers with different licensors namely the side wall fired reformer is of M/S Haldor Topsoe and terrace wall reformers are also available. the Technip stand in Providing the top fired reformer is that the maximum heat flux is to be provided to the 1/3rd length of the reformer catalyst tubes as the reaction goes on the from top and in the direction of the length of the tube and thus providing the top fired burners the flame length is so adjusted that it supplies the maximum heat to the top part till the almost mid length of the reformer tubes where the actual endothermic reaction is taking place. Although the top fired burners will not be providing uniform tube heating the new terrace fired reformers are getting more popularity these days because of its higher heat flux distribution and almost uniform tube temperatures. The main advantage is that the number of burners is less compared to the side wall fired reformers. So it depends on the licensor like which reformer he is providing. In our plant we are having Haldor Topsoe Side wall fired Reformer.
