Why does cavitation not occur in a reciprocating pump?

But cavitation DOES occur in reciprocating pumps if the pressure in the fluid in the suction port decreases below the bubble point during the suction stroke. In fact, cavitation is a major cause of failure of intake valves and piston rings.
