Saturation of aromatics is the key for boosting diesel cetane. Higher hydrogen partial pressure improves saturation of aromatics. Temperature dependency is limited by equilibrium. Other parameters such as vapor–liquid contact improvement, increasing catalyst-feed contacting do affect overall performance of diesel hydrotreaters.

Hydrodearomatization (HDA) or aromatic saturation, meaning add hydrogen to the aromatic compounds and turn them into straight chain compounds. Need catalyst and hydrogen, but not too high temperature (reaction equilibrium).

The chemical reactions involved in boosting cetane number in diesel hydrotreaters is saturation of aromatic compounds (poly, di and mono aromatics). However, greatest boost in cetane number is achieved by saturation of monoaromatics. These are thermodynamically limited by equilibrium with the equilibrium temperature a function of the pressure. Operating at high hydrogen partial pressure and low temperatures will favour cetane lift. In addition, noble metal catalysts are specifically geared towards aromatic saturation.
