It is efficient way of treating de-salter wastewater. These are called hydro- cyclones and effectively separate sludge, oil and water (Tricanters). Are used for heavy and naphanic crusde oils with difficult to separate de salter wastewater.Since these separators are based on principle of density difference work well irrespective of crude changes.New technologies are membrane based and claim perfect separation.Details can be obtained from supply er as refiners are reluctant to part information which many times is also not available. In principal both techniques are spirit and are used by number of refiners. I know one in India with private sector using the technology very effectively for decades.

One of the brine treatment method is to treat through hydrocyclones to separate oil and sludge from brine. But this could be economic when the desalter operates at higher pressure.
